FlexCare for the Ram 1500: Choosing a Plan for a Half-Ton
The Ram 1500 is a commuter, a family vehicle and a tow rig, often all three in one week. Many owners search for a "Ram 1500 extended warranty," but FlexCare plans are vehicle service contracts, not warranties or insurance. They work alongside your factory warranty under your contract's terms, exclusions and deductible. For heavy-duty diesel trucks, see our Ram 2500 page. For the whole lineup, see Ram coverage.
On a 1500, the Tier Decision Is Mostly About Technology
All three FlexCare Extended Care tiers list the half-ton's core drivetrain: the engine block and internals, cylinder heads, timing components, turbocharger (where equipped), automatic transmission and torque converter, transfer case, axles and drive shafts. The real differences between tiers are in the cab and the chassis electronics (Premium / Plus / Extended Care):
Engine, transmission, 4x4 driveline: ✓ / ✓ / ✓
Factory radios/speakers, body and engine control modules: ✓ / ✓ / —
Power seat, window and door-lock motors: ✓ / ✓ / —

A Simple Way to Decide
• Work-trim 1500, few options: Extended Care or Extended Care Plus may cover what's actually on the truck.
• Mid trims with power features: compare Plus with Premium, since Plus lists many power and electrical items.
• Loaded trims (big screens, heated seats, driver aids): much of that hardware is listed only on Premium.
We quote more than one tier side by side, so you can see the difference for your VIN.
Towing With a 1500
On FlexCare's chart, Premium lists the trailer sway damping system, and Premium and Plus list the rear springs, shocks and sway bar parts. Wear items such as brake pads and rotors aren't covered by these plans. Heavy towing makes following the owner's manual maintenance schedule (and keeping receipts) more important.
Buying Window for a 1500
• New: buy within 3 years/36,000 miles of the warranty start date. A surcharge may apply after 1 year/12,000 miles, so asking early can help.
• Pre-owned: up to 10 model years old with fewer than 150,000 miles (fewer than 125,000 with a 5-year/60,000-mile powertrain warranty), and an inspection is required.
• Paying: you can roll the plan into the truck loan only at the time of purchase, with lender approval. Later purchases of most mechanical plans can use FlexCare's interest-free payment plan, which requires a down payment.
Ram 1500 FlexCare Questions
Does FlexCare cover the Ram 1500's air suspension or eTorque system?
These aren't line items on the summary chart we publish. Ask us, and we'll check the plan provision for your VIN.
Do I get a rental truck if it's in the shop?
Plans include rental allowances when a covered failure keeps the vehicle overnight, subject to daily and per-occurrence limits in your contract, plus a First Day Rental allowance for same-day dealership visits.
Can I keep the coverage if I trade up?
Coverage stays with the vehicle. In most cases it can transfer to the next owner for a fee ($50 in most states), or the original purchaser can cancel for a refund calculated from the date written notice is received.
