Can I Buy a FlexCare Extended Warranty After My Factory Warranty Expires?

Your factory limited warranty is ending, or it has already ended, and you're wondering if it's too late to add Mopar FlexCare coverage. A lot of Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep and Ram owners ask us this. The short version is that waiting doesn't always shut you out. The rules depend on your vehicle's age, its mileage and which kind of plan it qualifies for.

FlexCare plans are vehicle service contracts. They're separate from, and in addition to, your factory limited warranty, and they're bought separately. Below is how eligibility works so you can figure out where your vehicle fits.

The Short Answer: Often, Yes

Yes, in many cases. Once a vehicle is past the new-vehicle buying window, it may still qualify for a FlexCare pre-owned plan. Pre-owned plans have their own age and mileage limits. So the answer for your vehicle depends on how old it is, how many miles it has, and which plan type it falls under.

Eligibility is confirmed by VIN. The quickest way to know for sure is to send us your VIN and current mileage.

The New-Vehicle Window: 3 Years/36,000 Miles From the Warranty Start Date

New-vehicle FlexCare plans can be bought any time within 3 years/36,000 miles of the vehicle's warranty start date. That's the day the vehicle was first delivered to its original owner. The window is measured from that date, not from the date your factory coverage ends or the date you bought the vehicle.

Two things to keep in mind:

  • A surcharge may apply after 1 year or 12,000 miles. You can still buy inside the window, but buying earlier may cost less.

  • If you bought your vehicle used, the clock started with the first owner. Check the original in-service date before you assume you're still inside the window.

Details are on our new vehicle protection page.

Pre-Owned Plan Rules for Older or Higher-Mileage Vehicles

If you're past the new-vehicle window, a traditional pre-owned plan may be the next option. To qualify, the vehicle must be:

  • No more than 10 model years old

  • Under 150,000 miles, or under 125,000 miles if it came with a 5-year/60,000-mile powertrain warranty

Mileage keeps going up, so if you're close to one of these limits, get a quote sooner rather than later. Eligibility is checked when you buy. See our pre-owned vehicle protection page for more.

Certified Pre-Owned (CPO) Plan Rules

If your vehicle is Certified Pre-Owned, there's a separate path. CPO plans are for Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, Ram, FIAT and Alfa Romeo vehicles that have an active CPO Limited Warranty and fewer than 75,000 miles. If your CPO coverage is still active and you're under the mileage limit, ask us about this option before the CPO warranty runs out.

When Your Coverage Starts

This is the part that surprises people most. Coverage start dates depend on the type of plan:

  • New-vehicle and CPO plans are measured from the vehicle's original warranty start date at zero miles, not from the date the factory warranty ends. Some of the plan's time and miles may already be used up on the day you buy.

  • Pre-owned plans start on the date and at the mileage you buy the plan.

That difference matters when you compare plan types for the same vehicle. A quote should show the plan's term and when it begins, and we'll go over both with you.

Pre-Existing Problems Aren't Covered

A vehicle service contract covers covered components that fail after you buy it. Repairs that are needed before the plan is purchased aren't covered, and neither are maintenance items, wear items or damage in general.

If your vehicle has a warning light, a leak or a noise right now, have it diagnosed and repaired first. Don't count on a new plan to pay for it. Your plan provision lists every exclusion, so read it before you sign.

How to Get a FlexCare Quote

Gupton Motors is an authorized Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep and Ram dealer in Springfield, Tennessee, and we've been in business for more than 60 years. Getting a quote works like this:

  1. Send your VIN and current mileage through our quote form or by phone.

  2. We check eligibility and tell you which plan types your vehicle qualifies for: new-vehicle, CPO or pre-owned.

  3. Compare options across the FlexCare plan tiers: Extended Care Premium, Extended Care Plus and Extended Care. Compare term, mileage and deductible side by side.

  4. Finish the paperwork. Quotes, paperwork and payment can often be completed remotely.

If you buy a plan after you've purchased your vehicle, most mechanical plans can be paid through FlexCare's interest-free monthly payment plan, which requires a down payment.

Covered repairs can be done at authorized Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, Ram, FIAT and Alfa Romeo dealers in the U.S., Canada and Mexico. Other repair shops can be used if FlexCare authorizes the repair before work begins.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it too late to buy a Mopar extended warranty if my factory warranty has expired?

Not necessarily. If your vehicle is outside the new-vehicle window, it may still qualify for a pre-owned plan: up to 10 model years old and under 150,000 miles (under 125,000 with a 5-year/60,000-mile powertrain warranty). Send us your VIN and we'll check.

Does a FlexCare plan cover problems my vehicle already has?

No. Repairs needed before a plan is purchased aren't covered. Have any current issue diagnosed and repaired before you buy coverage.

If I buy a new-vehicle plan in year two, when does coverage start?

New-vehicle plans are measured from the original warranty start date at zero miles, not from your purchase date. Pre-owned plans start on the date and mileage you buy. More answers are on our FAQ page.
